What Are You Reading?

“It’s Monday! What are you Reading?” is hosted by Sheila at Book Journey. It is a chance for book lovers to share their reading accomplishments as well as what is on the proverbial nightstand. She even does a giveaway. Subsequently Jen and Kellee at Teach Mentor Texts added an opportunity for those reading kidlit to join the fun. Since I read both I will post to both. Check them out, join the conversations, and discover more great books.

Books marked with an '*' I would put in my classroom library.

*The Future of Us by Jay Asher and Carolyn Mackler
Interesting premise in life before FaceBook.

Where I Want To Be by Adele Griffin
The story of how one girl’s mental illness impacts her sister.

*Sparrow Road by Sheila O’Connor
Empowering story with a female protagonist who figures out she is.

The Popularity Papers by Amy Ignatow
I can see why the girls are into these books, but I don’t feel that they need to be encouraged.

Gifts by Ursala K LeGuin

Brain Rules for Babies by John Medina
Birth through age five, so still applicable for my little one.

Daring Greatly by Brene Brown
I especially liked the thoughts on culture.

The Tragedy Paper by Elizabeth Laban (audio)

The Morning Meeting Book by Roxann Kriete

The Power of Our Words by Paula Denton
Great pairing with Opening Minds by Peter H Johnston.

Split by Swati Avasthi
(Would want in a high school classroom library. Physically abusive father and how it impacts the family dynamics, particularly the sons.)

Touch Blue by Cynthia Lord
If you like The Great Gilly Hopkins or Anne of Green Gables this is a book for you.

The Moon Over High Street by Natalie Babbitt

*The Keys to the Kingdom Bk 1 Mister Monday by Garth Nix
I am a Garth Nix fan and I think this series would be appealing to many students.

  1. I just read Opening Minds this summer, and have had Power of Our Words on my TBR shelf for a few years now (a little embarrassed by that), I'll need to take it out and dive into it soon. And, I definitely want to check out Brain Rules for Babies, as my daughter is 15 months:)

  2. I have the entire Keys to the Kingdom series (and the Sabriel series too) but haven't gotten around to reading them yet. Good to hear that it's engaging. I think I own a copy of Gifts as well - I have to get cracking on the many unread books in my shelves. Have a great reading week ahead of you!
